Astrolabe is building the foundational health infrastructure for human spaceflight.

We are creating a space-native clinical system designed for mission critical environments: offline operation, secure data exchange, and long duration human exploration.

We are pre-seed, founder-led, and backed by deep operational medicine expertise. Our clinical partner already holds active contracts with leading commercial space operators, giving us direct line of sight into how this infrastructure gets used in real flight operations.

We are hiring our Founding Engineer to define the technical architecture of Astrolabe and ship the first production grade version of our platform.

What You Will Own

In the early days, pre-team, you will be responsible for:

• End to end technical architecture

• Secure cloud infrastructure

• Longitudinal health record data model

• Telemetry ingestion and normalization pipelines

• Security primitives and access control

• De-identification of datasets

• CI/CD and deployment systems

• The engineering hiring bar

Once a team of engineers is hired post-raise your role will grow change into a leadership role. You will instead be responsible for:

• Leading the engineering team

• Ensuring your direct reports always have meaningful work to do

• Driving the technical direction of the product

• Leading stand-ups and check ins

• Being ultimately responsible for the output of the engineers

You will work directly with the founders, turning clinical and operational requirements into durable infrastructure.

We hold ourselves to a high-bar and expect you to do the same but this opportunity will also allow you to define the technical side of the entire product with a hands off approach. We hire smart people and then get out of their way.

Must Have

• Been part of building something from zero to production. Even better if you built it yourself. Entrepreneurial spirit is vital in this role. This will not be a traditional environment.

• Strong engineering foundation. Ideally backend or full stack.

• Experience with secure or regulated systems (healthcare, fintech, defense, critical infra, air-gap…)

• Threat modeling instinct. Least privilege as default.

• Comfort operating without fully specified tickets

• 5+ years of engineering experience pushing code to production.

• Strong communication skills.

• Strong leadership instincts.

Nice to Have

• Healthcare interoperability (HL7, FHIR) experience

• HIPAA or FedRAMP exposure

• High reliability or mission critical systems background

• Experience leading early engineering teams

Compensation

We are pre-seed and the company is currently being bootstrapped. We are looking to close our seed round within the next couple of months. We are leaning equity heavy or equity only structures for the right person who wants to be a true partner in building this company from day zero.

Astrolabe is not building consumer software. We are building institutional infrastructure for human spaceflight. This role defines the technical foundation of the company for the next decade.
